Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider operating that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its results. We do not retain or record those search terms on our systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email or other direct message may be kept long enough to address it and maintain the related correspondence. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
When a page loads, the server may collect routine technical details about the visit:
- The date and time of each page request
- The referring website, when one is available
- The pages viewed and the time spent on them
- The device type and operating system
- The browser name and version
- The device's assigned IP address
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files placed on a device. We use them with analytics services to understand traffic in aggregate, such as which pages are visited most and where visits end. A browser can block cookies, although doing so may change how some website functions behave.

No Criminal-Record Data on File
Marshall County Criminal History does not keep, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It provides general directions to official custodians, including the Marshall County sheriff and courts, the West Virginia State Police Criminal Identification Bureau, and the West Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Visitor data is not compiled into a consumer report or a file about another person.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the website's search boxes. A query sent through one of those boxes is governed by that provider's privacy policy rather than this policy. Each provider controls its own retention and disclosure practices, so its policy should be reviewed before a query is submitted.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to Marshall County agencies, West Virginia court portals, state offices, legal aid resources, or outside search services. Once a visitor follows an outbound link, the destination's privacy terms apply. Review them before providing personal information.
Some advertising providers may use activity across websites to select ads. That processing takes place on the provider's systems and under its terms.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal information. Data may be available to the following limited groups:
- Advertising networks that place ads on the website
- Analytics vendors that measure traffic and performance
- Search providers that process queries sent to their tools
- A government or law-enforcement body acting under a valid legal demand
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable, standard safeguards are used for data within our control. No internet service can guarantee perfect security, however, so we cannot promise that unauthorized access or another breach will never occur.
Users Under 18
The website is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. Information known to have come from a minor will be removed.
Your Data Rights
Rights can vary with a visitor's place of residence. The West Virginia Freedom of Information Act, W. Va. Code chapter 29B, article 1, governs access to qualifying government records and does not turn this private website into a public agency. Separately, W. Va. Code §15-2-24(d) limits nongovernmental access to Criminal Identification Bureau records by requiring the subject's signed, acknowledged authorization and superintendent approval. Those statutes do not replace any data rights that otherwise apply to this site. At a minimum, you may:
- Opt out of certain processing where the law permits
- Request deletion of data associated with you
- Ask that inaccurate information be corrected
- Request a copy of personal information held about you
Updates to This Policy
This policy may be revised as practices or legal requirements change. A revised version becomes available on this page and carries its new effective date.
